Rebuilding your engine / fixing a blown head gasket

This page is under construction. Please come back later

This page tells you most of the parts I've done on my car / engine during the winter of 2000 - 2001. I started as an easy job to replace the headgasket, but I ended up taking everything apart. On this page you see the part list, other pages on my site will go into more detail on how to fix certain things.

BHG

All cars have problems, and the bad thing about problems with cars is they turn up when you already got the car for a few years. One of the most known problems with the Toyota Supra 7M-GTE engine is a blown head gasket. There is not a good explanation why the head gasket is one of the weak spots of the engine, but in general we (the Supra enthusiasts) think the designers did not expect the pressure on the head gasket would be so big to blow it out eventually.

Furthermore the head bolts are of a BAD QUALITY. This would be the main cause for the BHG. With the constant heating and cooling off of the 7M-GTE engine, the head bolts will get loose eventually. A re-torque every 100.000 km is strongly advised. In case you are already too late and have blown your head gasket out, replace the bad head bolts with better quality ones, for example the ARP head bolts.

How do you know you have a blown head gasket?

Although for every cause leading to the blown head gasket is another problem feasible, the general symptoms of a blown head gasket are:

  • Engine is overheating on a regular basis, for example after half an hour on the highway and then standing still for a red light. Note overheating is not 'in the red' but everything about 3/4 of the water temp gauge.
  • You need to add a lot of coolant (or water) because the engine blows out quite some coolant regularly.
  • You hear all kind of weird water running sounds in the engine bay while driving (this are the exhaust gases in the water circuit)

To prevent a blown head gasket or to put it off for a few more thousand miles, you can re-torque the head bolts of the engine. This is generally speaking a job doable in one day and is explained in detail on my re-torque page.
