Exhaust modifications
One of the first modifications to start 'serious' tuning on the Toyota Supra
Turbo, will be replacing the exhaust. In my case I replaced the exhaust as the
'first' modification.
The exhaust on the Supra consists of three parts, namely:
- Down pipe
- Catalytic Converter
- Cat back
The down pipe of the Supra is the pipe which goes 'down' from the turbo elbow,
to underneath the car. There it bolts into the catalytic converter. After the
catalytic converter comes the 'cat back' what normal people would name an
exhaust.
The following pictures show the three separate parts.
Left picture: In the far left end you see me using a grinder to get the bolts off that
connect the down pipe to the cat. These bolts really get rusty after 12 years
laying underneath a car.
Right picture: Here you see the complete stock exhaust. We were a little
optimistic to use a normal wrench to unbolt the exhaust. We ended up using the
grinder.
Now the next pictures show you the parts we put on the car. The shiny silver
thing is the HKS down pipe, the little pot is the catalytic converter and the
huge thing is the Apex-i dunk catback.
This next pictures show the new exhaust being mounted on the car
The easiest way to get the exhaust mounted is first put the down pipe on the
turbo elbow, and then hang the cat back in the rubbers. Bolt the cat in between
and your done. Don't forget to replace the gaskets when they're worn. Gaskets
really cost nothing compared to your exhaust system so that shouldn't be the
problem. The new gaskets can be greased in with the heat grease supplied with
the cat or cat back (if supplied).
